SAN DIEGO SHOCKER

John DiGiovanni Delivers Massive Upset While Championship Battle Ends in a Dead Heat

If there was ever a race that proved anything can happen in Victory Lane Racing, it was San Diego.

Entering the weekend, John DiGiovanni sat dead last in the standings. Seventeen races into the season, he owned a series-worst 39.18 average finish, had just one previous top-10 finish, and was more than 300 points behind the championship leader. None of that mattered Sunday night.

DiGiovanni stunned the field at Naval Base Coronado, driving the Duff's Wings Chevrolet to his second career Victory Lane Racing NASCAR Cup Series victory and one of the biggest upsets in recent series history. Chevrolet collected its sixth victory of the season while DiGiovanni became the latest reminder that every driver in the field is capable of stealing the spotlight on any given weekend.

The race quickly turned into a survival test for many of the title contenders. Jamie Dyke entered the weekend holding a four-point lead over Greg Miller, but both drivers endured difficult nights. Dyke finished 40th while Miller crossed the line 36th. Miller gained exactly four points, allowing the two drivers to leave San Diego tied atop the standings at 518 points each.

Several drivers took advantage of the chaos.

Top Five Finishers:

1. John DiGiovanni

2. Julie Taylor

3. Darrell Cox

4. Britten Steinfels

5. Nick Hagen

Julie Taylor earned her first runner-up finish of the season and climbed four spots in the standings. Darrell Cox matched the best finish of his 2026 campaign with a third-place effort, while Britten Steinfels continued his recent improvement by scoring his third top-five finish of the year. Nick Hagen completed the top five and made one of the biggest jumps in the standings after entering the weekend outside the top 25.

Rob Kuczmarski quietly continued his consistent season with a sixth-place finish. Despite owning only a single victory, Kuczmarski remains firmly inside the top 10 in points thanks to a series-best six top-10 finishes.

Conan Hultgren produced a season-best seventh-place run, while Eldon Daughenbaugh's eighth-place finish added yet another strong result to a season that now includes seven top-10 finishes.

Biggest Mover:

Nick Hagen (+5, 28th to 23rd)

Biggest Losers:

Kevin Sullivan (-5, 20th to 25th)

Championship Picture

The regular-season championship battle could not be any tighter.

Jamie Dyke and Greg Miller leave San Diego tied atop the standings with 518 points each after Miller erased Dyke's four-point advantage. Neither driver had a race to remember, but Miller's slightly better finish was enough to completely reset the title fight.

Scott Schmitt continued his steady climb toward the front. The Michigan winner followed up that performance with a 13th-place finish in San Diego and jumped two positions to third in points, only eight markers behind the co-leaders.

Stephen DiCaprio remains fourth at minus-10, while Mathew Steinfels rounds out the top five despite suffering through a disappointing 45th-place finish.

Bubble Watch

The battle around the playoff cut line tightened again.

Dawn Keller currently occupies the final transfer position in 16th place with 426 points. Al Allison sits just five points behind in 17th, while Ron Blackman, Gary Dadey, Dan Clarke, and Eldon Daughenbaugh remain within 25 points of the cutoff.

Nick Hagen's fifth-place finish was especially important. After starting the weekend 28th in points, Hagen now sits 23rd and has cut his deficit to the playoff line to just 46 points.

With only nine races remaining before the Chase field is set after Race 26, every position gained on track is becoming increasingly valuable.

Inside the Numbers

Dan Clarke may be the hottest driver outside the playoff field. While his season average finish sits at 23.18, his last-10-race average is an impressive 16.60, a series-best improvement of +6.58 positions.

Gary Dadey's recent surge remains among the strongest in the series. His season average finish is 24.35, but over the last 10 races he has improved to 19.00, a gain of +5.35 positions.

At the top of the standings, Scott Schmitt continues to build momentum. His 15.30 average finish over the last 10 races ranks among the best in the field and has helped move him from the playoff bubble to legitimate championship contender status.

Next Up

The series heads to Sonoma Raceway for Race 18 of the season.

Nine races remain before the Chase begins, and San Diego only intensified the pressure. The points lead is tied. The playoff bubble is separated by single digits. And after John DiGiovanni's shocking victory, the entire field has been reminded that anything can happen as the 2026 season enters its final stretch before the playoffs.
